Forecast Accuracy Is Becoming CS's Credibility Metric

In supply chain, nobody asks whether a demand planner is well-liked. They ask one thing: how accurate is the forecast. Mean absolute percentage error, bias, tracking signal — these aren't soft signals, they're the scoreboard. A planner's credibility is built or lost on whether the number they committed to actually held up, month over month, not on how the number felt in the room when they presented it.

Customer Success leadership has never had to answer that question. I think that's about to change, and I don't think most CS leaders are ready for it.

Planners are scored on accuracy. CS leaders have never been asked to be.

Every demand or supply planner I ever worked with lived under a forecast accuracy target. It was on their scorecard next to their name. Miss it consistently and it didn't matter how good your relationships with the sales team were — the number told the story. CS leadership has no equivalent. Quota exists. Retention rate exists. But the accuracy of the renewal forecast itself, the thing a board actually plans against, has rarely been anyone's job to be right about. That's starting to look like an obvious gap, not a quirky industry difference.

NPS and CSAT don't tell the board what it actually wants to know.

Satisfaction metrics answer a real question, just not the one the board is asking in a revenue review. A board wants to know if the number CS committed to three months ago is the number that's going to show up. NRR pressure is making that gap impossible to ignore — I'm seeing CS leaders get asked, directly, "how confident are you in that number," and realizing they've never had to quantify their own track record on being right. Forecast accuracy is starting to earn a seat on the dashboard next to NPS and CSAT, not instead of them.

A predictable miss and a surprise miss aren't the same failure.

In supply planning, a forecast that trends down for months before landing short reads completely differently than one that sits flat and then craters in the final week — even if the final miss is identical in size. The first is a planner who saw the signal and communicated it. The second is a planner who either missed the signal or sat on it. I think that distinction is exactly what boards are starting to apply to CS. A renewal number that slips gradually, with visible variance the leader called out along the way, builds trust even when it misses. A renewal number that looks fine until the week it doesn't destroys trust regardless of the final size of the gap.

I don't think forecast accuracy replaces NPS or CSAT as the metric that defines good CS leadership. I think it becomes the metric that defines credible CS leadership — the one that determines whether the board trusts the next number you bring them. If you lead CS, I'm curious whether anyone's ever actually measured you on it.
